Text Messaging Used as Malware Lure


We claim that we are the texting/SMS capital of the world, well then, many Filipinos still do not know (they don’t even believe) that it is possible to get viruses via their mobile phones (in any form). Moreover, most Filipinos are not aware of the growing threat of identity thieves (identity thefts).

The latest social engineering trick is to send SMS (short messaging service) alerts to mobile phones with a warning that the target has subscribed to an online dating service that racked up expensive charges on cell phone bills.

At least this one requires one to visit a website, some Filipinos were already victimized by malicious coding via SMS, MMS and WAP years ago – they lost all their contacts, saved messages, or the sim was left unusable – worst, some did received viruses and rendered their phones useless.
