Yesterday, typhoon Milenyo with an international name of Xangsane, hit the Capital of the Philippines – Metro Manila, 11 years since the metro was directly hit (Typhoon Rosang with 260+ kph).
And majority of the population and establishments were not ready. Just like I said on July 22, 2006 – What is wrong with the Philippines, we seriously need Emergency Sirens and a very effective disaster information announcements.
Follow up:
Just like yesterday morning, people still went to their work, went to the malls, and other public places. Simply, no one knew how powerful and destructive this storm will be – well, only those in the know-loop knows but not the general public. If only we have emergency sirens, they can simply alarm it and everyone will be alarmed that they must stay indoors, if at all, don’t go out! But no, we don’t have those, so we ended up, for two days already, stranded people and for the most, are already very tired.
But good news is, there are very few death casualties, unlike 11 years ago, there were hundreds. Then sad news again, electricity supply is still down for another 2 to 5 days as the Meralco triple-checks all the power grids, power stations and power poles to avoid potential problems once power are put back online. This, put also many of the Philippine-based websites offline, especially many of the self-funded Pinoy Web2.0 sites.
From where I was yesterday, certain portions of the Market! Market! mall’s roofs and open area establishments, in the Fort Bonifacio Global City was torn off by the strong winds. The mall asked all tenants to closed for the day and asked all the people to go home, but it was too late, because the winds are strong already (and so does the rain). Many malls did the same thing, in my opinion, they should’ve have not opened at all yesterday! If ONLY we have a very good working system when disaster is looming in the metro and in the country in general. The National Disaster Coordinating Council? Well, their function is to assess the “end-result”, not to warn. At least that’s how I’ve always seen NDCC’s function to the Filipino people. Again I will stress this: WE NEED EMERGENCY SIRENS and an EARLY WARNING DEPARTMENT!!!
