Richard Garriott Leaves NCsoft

The father of electronic RPGs and MMORPGs sent a letter to NCsoft, the team, and the loyal fans of his second online game, Tabula Rasa. This letter is about his decision to leave the NCsoft and the scene of MMORPGs and probably gaming in general.

If you are a gamer and you do not know your history (which most MMORPG gamers dont), Richard Garriott was the first to develop electronic Role-Playing Games – the very first was Akalabeth (unofficially called by fans as Ultima 0).

Follow up:

After the success of Akalabeth (which he was selling via Macro Floppy Disks [that is bigger than the Mini Floppy, and way much bigger than the Micro Floppy]), he created the most popular electronic RPG of all time – the Ultima series (from Ultima 1 to Ultima IX). With the company he and his elder brother founded – Origin Systems Inc. going by the tagline We Create Worlds.

Origin Systems or OSI, was not only popular with Ultima, but also with the Wing Commander series (now I’m sure that will ring a bell). Later, the company was bought by Electronic Arts popular among gamers simply as ‘EA’, they released the first MMORPG Ultima Online at this time. Richard, and his brother Robert, later left OSI to found their new company Destination Games.

DG later merged with NCsoft Korea to form NCsoft Austin, which I know the majority of MMORPG gamers today are very much familiar. After so many years of developing his second online game, Tabula Rasa was launched. Then Operation Immortality was developed which was supported by Professor Stephen Hawking and plenty of other prominent celebrities, developers, CEOs, and scientists – including gamers of course.

Richard went to the International Space Station, brought the DNA of all participants of the Operation Immortality project. Fulfilled his life-long dream. Went back to our blue planet, and sent his farewell letter. Which is quoted below:

Fellow Soldiers of the AFS,

I am happy to finally be able to write the players and community of Tabula Rasa. We’ve been on quite a journey together. First in creating a game unlike any other on the MMO market, then growing a loyal community and finally launching the game and its players into space with Operation Immortality. It has been quite an unforgettable journey, one that I will treasure for the rest of my life.

I am very grateful to you loyal players for sticking around through what I think we can all honestly say was a rough launch. I thank the development team for pushing hard to get polish, updates and new content out every month since launch…a feat that I think is unusual in MMO development. They have a lot to be proud of.

Many of you probably wonder what my plans are, now that I have achieved the lifelong dream of going to space. Well, that unforgettable experience has sparked some new interests that I would like to devote my time and resources to. As such, I am leaving NCsoft to pursue those interests.

This news is difficult for me to deliver. I am honored to have worked with the team I’ve had and I’m grateful to the community who makes this game so unique and fun.

Thank you and farewell.

Richard “General British” Garriott

Bon Voyage Lord British. You revolutionized gaming, you inspired us all, and you created worlds for us all. Good luck and God Speed to your new endeavors, and always remember, we are all here waiting for the return of the King of Britannia and the General of the AFS.

(The history mentioned above was summarized and compressed. Leaving out other [IMO] minor details.)
